It depends on the filter: how many cartridges it takes, whether it is an under-sink, filter tap, fridge or whole house system, and whether you have bought the cartridges or we supply them. The makers of common Australian systems publish 6 to 12 months for standard sediment and carbon cartridges, and about 12 months for the filters behind boiling and filter taps. Your filter's manual has the real interval, and busy households or water carrying more sediment use a cartridge up sooner. Often, yes, on an under-sink filter, following the maker's instructions and turning the water off at the filter's own isolation valve first. If there is no valve to turn off, the housing is cracked, or the head leaks after the change, call a plumber before the cupboard is damaged.

It is a good job for one. The housing sits on the main water line into the house, so the water has to be isolated and the pressure released first, and a seal that has not seated properly can leak. Filter makers recommend their own genuine cartridges to keep the filter's performance and warranty, and some warn that a compatible cartridge may fit but not perform the same. If you choose a compatible one, match the maker's part number and look for independent NSF/ANSI certification of anything it claims to remove. Usually the O-ring is twisted, damaged or has not seated properly, and a cracked bowl or head will leak too. A small drip in a closed cupboard can go unnoticed until the cabinet is damaged, so turn off the valve to the filter, dry the cupboard and call us.
