A whole house water filter can cost a few hundred dollars off the shelf or a few thousand fitted, and both prices can be fair. The gap is the system, its certification, the plumbing at your main line and the cartridges you keep buying. Here is what the market publishes, what moves the number, and what to ask for in a written quote.

Prices fall into two groups: shelf kits sold supply only, with a licensed plumber's labour on top, and specialists' installed prices. These are the published market prices we found on 24 September 2026, not Mr Splash prices.
At the shelf end, Bunnings lists Stefani whole of house kits from $261 to $760, and Pure Water Systems says its kits should always be installed by a licensed plumber because they connect straight to your incoming supply. At the installed end, published prices for one system cluster between about $3,000 and $4,000. Puretec's FilterWall systems sit higher, and Puretec says installation costs on top vary with local rates and how complex your plumbing is.

What Drives the Price
Two quotes can sit thousands of dollars apart for sound reasons. These six things move the number. Figures are published market ranges from the named sources, not Mr Splash prices.
System Type and Stages

Size and Flow Rate

Certification

Isolation Valves and a Bypass

What the Installation Involves
Installation is where the shelf price and the installed price part ways. This is the work a licensed plumber does at your main line.
Published labour ranges vary with the job. Fluid Plumbing, on the Central Coast and in Newcastle, puts whole house installation labour at $300 to $900, and My Water Filter puts a standard install at about $700. All Home Filtration says a standard install takes 2 to 4 hours.
- Find the main line where the supply enters the house, so every tap, shower and appliance is downstream of the filter.
- Check the pressure so the system suits the flow your home needs.
- Fit isolation valves and a bypass so the filter can be shut off for a cartridge change while the house keeps its water.
- Mount the housings with room to open them, out of direct sun and weather or under a proper cover.
- Test for leaks at full mains pressure, then set the cartridge schedule with you.

What Not to Pay For in Sydney
Some extras are worth it. Some are sold on fear, and Sydney's water does not need them.
- A water softener. Sydney Water puts Greater Sydney's water at about 57 mg/L of calcium carbonate, which is soft. Great Water Filters publishes its whole house and softener package at $7,595, a premium for a problem most Sydney homes do not have.
- A whole house system sold for PFAS. A 2020 study found whole house carbon systems gave variable PFAS results, and in four of eight the filtered water had more PFAS. An under-sink reverse osmosis or dual-stage filter is the proven option, and cheaper: All Home Filtration publishes reverse osmosis from $799, against $3,490 for its whole home system.
- A system sold as a safety fix. Sydney Water reports every plant below the national PFAS guideline values, and NHMRC says households on such a supply do not need extra home water treatment.
- A paid lab test on mains water. Awesome Water's guide puts testing at $100 to $300. Sydney Water already tests the mains supply and publishes the results.
