Sink And Toilet Blocked Together
If the sink backs up when the toilet flushes, or several drains are slow at once, the blockage is in the main drain, not the sink. That is a blocked drain, and it needs clearing before it overflows.
Sink Full Of Water
The kitchen sink or basin will not empty at all. Stop running water into it and do not pour in more drain cleaner: it sits in the pipe and makes the blockage harder to open safely.
Slow, Gurgling Or Smelly Sink
Water drains but takes a while, gurgles on the way down, or the sink smells. It is partly blocked. If the smell is the main problem, see smelly drains.

Sometimes, on a light blockage close to the plug. They rarely shift fat that has set hard or a blockage past the trap, and caustic cleaner left sitting in a full sink can damage older pipes and burn skin when the pipe is opened. If one has not worked, do not add more; tell our plumber what you used.
Answer:
It depends on where the blockage is and what it is. Hair in a basin trap is quicker than fat set hard in the pipe behind the wall, and a blockage past the sink in the main drain is a different job again. We look first and give you one fixed price before any work starts.

Hot water and a sink plunger, with the other bowl sealed, can move a soft blockage near the plug. If water still sits after that, the fat has set further down and needs a drain machine or a jet to clear it properly. Scraping plates into the bin stops most kitchen sink blockages from coming back.

Usually because the last clear only made a hole through the blockage and left the rest stuck to the pipe, or because something further down is catching everything: a pipe with too little fall, a broken joint or tree roots in the drain outside. We clear the full line and, when it keeps coming back, find the reason.

A slow sink is a partial blockage: hair and soap in a basin, fat and food in a kitchen sink, building up until only a trickle gets past. Gurgling as it drains means it is also short of air. Slow sinks almost always get worse, so it is easier to clear one before it stops.

Because they share the drain further down. When a toilet and a sink, or several fixtures, back up together, the blockage is in the main line rather than the sink. Stop using water in the house and call, because it needs clearing before it overflows.

Lift out the plug if it comes free and clean the hair off it; a plastic drain claw can pull more from the pipe below. If the basin is still slow after that, the hair and soap have built up in the trap or the waste pipe and need a plumber.

Gurgling is air being pulled through the water in the trap. It happens when the pipe is partly blocked, or when the drain cannot draw air from its vent. If it gurgles when other fixtures drain, the blockage is usually further down in the shared line.

Then cleaning out the trap under the sink will not fix it, and the water keeps sitting in the sink. The blockage is in the waste pipe inside the wall or floor, or in the drain it runs to outside. We clear it from the nearest access point with a drain machine or a high pressure jet.
