The Blocked Shower Drains We Clear

The grate is only the start. Behind it sit a trap and a waste pipe that join the rest of the bathroom.

Hair In The Shower Waste

Hair binds with soap and shampoo into a mat just under the grate and in the trap. We lift the grate and clear the trap and the pipe behind it.

Slow Draining Showers

Water that takes a while to go means soap scum is narrowing the waste pipe. Cleared properly, the shower drains as fast as it fills.

Floor Wastes

The floor waste is the bathroom's overflow drain. When it blocks, a leak or an overflow has nowhere to go but across the floor, so we clear it with the shower.

Showers That Keep Blocking

If the shower blocks again soon after it is cleared, something is catching the hair and soap: a sagging pipe, a broken joint or tree roots outside. We find it and fix it.

How Bad Is Your Shower Drain?

Three situations cover almost every blocked shower we are called to.

Most urgent

Water Coming Up Through The Drain

Water rising up the shower when the toilet flushes means the drain below is blocked, not just the shower. Stop using water in the house and call: it is a blocked drain and the next stage is an overflow.

Shower Not Draining At All

The shower fills and stays full. Stop using it and skip the drain cleaner: most do not reach a hair blockage, and they make the pipe harder to open safely.

Slow Or Gurgling Shower

It drains, but slowly, or gurgles as it goes. A partial blockage is building up. Book it in before it becomes a shower you cannot use.

How We Clear A Blocked Shower Drain

Three steps, usually in the one visit.

Find The Blockage

We lift the grate, check the trap and run water in the other fixtures to see whether it is the shower or the drain it shares. Then you get one fixed price.

Clear The Waste And The Line

Hair and soap come out of the trap, then the waste pipe is cleared with a drain machine, or with the jet blaster when the blockage is in the shared drain.

Test And Tidy

We run the shower until it drains freely, refit the grate and show you what came out, so you know what to keep out of it.

Blocked Shower Drain FAQs

Answer:

On a thin layer of soap scum, sometimes. Most shower blockages are a mat of hair that liquid cleaners soak into rather than dissolve, and cleaner left sitting in a full shower can damage older pipes and make the job riskier to open. If one has not worked, do not add another; tell our plumber what you used.

Answer:

It depends on where the blockage is. Hair in the trap under the grate is a short job; a blockage in the drain the shower shares with the toilet takes longer and different equipment. We look first and give you one fixed price before any work starts.

Answer:

Lift the grate and pull out the hair you can reach, then try hot water and a plunger over the drain. If water still pools, the hair and soap are further down in the trap or the waste pipe, where a drain machine clears them properly.

Answer:

Wear gloves, lift the grate and hook the hair out of the trap with a plastic drain claw. A hair catcher over the grate afterwards stops most of it going back down.

Answer:

Most often hair and soap in the trap or the waste pipe. If the toilet or basin is also slow, or the shower gurgles when they drain, the blockage is further down in the shared drain and needs clearing from outside.

Answer:

Either the last clear left hair stuck to the pipe, or something in the line is catching it: a pipe with too little fall, a broken joint, or tree roots in the drain outside. We clear the whole line and, if it keeps coming back, find out why.

Answer:

Because the shower and the toilet share a drain, and the water rushing past pulls air through the shower trap. It usually means the shared drain is partly blocked. Left alone it tends to get worse, until water comes up through the shower.

Answer:

Water rising up the shower when another fixture drains means the drain below the shower is blocked and the water has nowhere else to go. Stop using water in the house and call a plumber, because the next stage is an overflow.
