If gas is escaping from the street main or from the meter itself, that part belongs to the network operator and we will tell you so rather than charge you to find out.

The price depends on what the leak turns out to be, so we do not quote a figure over the phone before anyone has looked. What is fixed is the process: the gas fitter makes the site safe, finds the leak, and gives you one fixed price for the repair before any work begins. During business hours, Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm, there is no call-out fee just to come and look.

A soap solution on an exposed fitting will show bubbles, and it is a reasonable first check on something you can see, like a bottle connection. It will not find a leak inside a wall, under a floor or on a buried line, and it cannot tell you whether the whole installation holds pressure. Only a pressure test can do that, and only a licensed gas fitter can legally repair and certify gas work.

Yes. A small leak in an enclosed space becomes a large problem over hours, and the smell you notice in a doorway can be much stronger in a cupboard or a subfloor. Gas also displaces air, so headaches and dizziness are warning signs to get out rather than investigate. Treat any gas smell as urgent.
