The Five Steps, in Detail
1. Meter Off
The main shut-off valve is at the front boundary in the box marked 'water meter'. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
2. Power Off Near Water
If water is near power points or appliances, turn off those circuits at the switchboard. A wet switchboard: stay clear.
3. Drain the Line
Open the lowest cold tap in the house, ideally an outside garden tap, so the pipes empty away from the damage.
4. Contain and Photograph
Move what you can, towels and buckets under drips, and photograph everything before cleanup for your insurer.
5. Call 24/7
